Meet the Principal

Principal Avila
Mrs. Avila – Principal of Pine Grove STEM School

My name is Amanda Avila and I am an educator and advocate for teaching and learning by profession and passion. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher and school administrator. At the age of 20, I was hired to teach 3rd grade in Tracy, CA. At this point, I had completed my Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies and was nearly finished with my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. Shortly after hiring, I began my Masters Degree in Education. I taught for Jefferson School District for 7 years at various grades including Middle School Physical Education while coaching Middle School Boys & Girls Basketball before opening an educational childcare center to allow me to be with my own children. I owned and operated an educational childcare center and preschool that served many children from infant to school age. I later decided I wanted to teach part-time at the college level. I was hired as an adjunct professor at Heald College and a few months later became full-time faculty. I taught under the General Education department and was the professor/ administrative designee in charge of hiring, evaluating, training, and the mentoring of on-boarding adjunct professors. My time with the college allowed me the opportunity to do instructor screening, interviewing, program development, documenting and preparing for internal, external and Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) audits. This was a wonderful experience and proved to me that I enjoy administrative tasks involving teacher development, evaluation, coaching, school accountability and leadership.

In the 2013-2014 school year, I began teaching closer to home at Pine Grove STEM School and cut my commute from 1.5 hours to 3 minutes. In my two years teaching at Pine Grove I took on many projects, and became very involved in site, district, and statewide professional development and initiatives. This was when I fell in love with the small-town feel and family-like environment at Pine Grove STEM School. I knew then that this was the school were I would live out the bulk of my career. After teaching 3rd grade for only 2 years at Pine Grove, an opportunity I couldn’t deny had presented itself and I then was hired as the school principal. As principal of Pine Grove STEM School, I have found what I would like to think of as my permanent “home” in education. I work with an amazing and passionate staff to serve the best students and families a principal could ask for.

I enjoy many things that Amador County provides my family. I am happily married to my husband Marc of 15 years and together we have 3 children. Our family loves spending time together at their sporting events, camping, riding dirt-bikes, swimming, snowboarding and so much more. I love sports and have been riding and sometimes racing dirt bikes since I was 4. I played basketball, volleyball, swimming and water polo from my childhood through college. I also love cooking, crafting, decorating, bargain hunting and being with family and friends.
